THE INAUGURATION OF PRESIDENT OBAMA

Tomorrow our country witnesses and experiences the inauguration of our new President. Many words are being offered these days about this incredible event, one that appears to be bringing our nation together, with a sense of common purpose.

Let us join our prayers to those of millions for our new President: for his wisdom, health and well being. Let us pray also for our country. Be we Republican, Democrat or Independent, there is something special having that word UNITED as part of our identity, part of our country's name.

With best wishes to our new President and with continued HOPE for the land we love---

Yes, and let us also pray for the unborn who will be slaughtered under the will and direction of our new President. May our Lord change his heart before one innocent child is destroyed through his liberalization of abortion.

The decision to abort is not the President's. Legal prohibitions against abortion will only create more problems. The Constitution is not going to be amended and even pre Roe v Wade, it was a state by state issue, therefore causing enormous problems.

Our new President has a track record of seeking to work with those who do not agree with his political position so as to reduce the number of abortions. Most certainly, his selection of and relationship with Rev. Rick Warren is a clear indicator.

It's time to quit fighting the old battles and time to start working together!

Don't be duped Bob. He has promised to support the Freedom of Choice Act which will make abortions more affordable and available. In addition, he has already reversed the "Mexico City Policy" by allowing our tax money to go to foreign abortion providers. We cannot stick our heads in the sand in the name of unity and allow this evil to thrive.

In honesty, I don't feel duped!
In honesty also, I have had a long standing discomfort with abortion. Back in my younger days, I was an active member of what is called the right to life movement, even being a presenter on a speaking team who appeared and I spoke in a lot of different places and forums, even debating those who are 'pro choice'. As a matter of fact, to this day, I don't think Roe v Wade is a well constructed judicial ruling.

Over a period of time, I came to learn two things;

1. Abortion was not going to go away by a change in the law.

2. Given the variety of religious positions regarding both life and circumstances under which it can be taken, it is best for the law to allow people the free exercise of conscience.

In addition, as a human being and a Pastor, I have also come to realize more deeply that moral choices made in conscience are often very complicated and not as absolute as they seem in the abstract. Though strict 'right to lifers' would have problems with my statement, I would point to the fact that many of them accept the concept of killing in warfare as indication that they are willing, in circumstances, to relativize the absolute.

Thus, I have come to believe that :

1. Roe v Wade is law and is not going to be overturned. Any effort to do so would be both futile and questionable.

2. Even though abortion is legal, people on both sides of the debate can work to make abortion rarer than it is and to promote broad based family planning-

Thanks for listening and writing-

I will be writing a post about this sometime, but it is important to note that in opposing President Obama's action, one is also opposing access by very poor women to a wide range of health services, including prenatal care as well as contraceptive services to reduce the number of abortions-

Unfortunately, when we get politically polarized, one issue becomes dominant and we don't see the whole picture-
