The annual January abortion discussion...

As you will see from the comments after the post below, the issue of abortion continues to be a rather intense one politically and among people of religious faith. I'll be happy to elaborate on this more and already have in some responses, but I'd like to echo Colin McEnroe of the Hartford Courant in suggesting an approach to abortion that renders it SAFE, LEGAL ,and RARE. In so doing, I believe we can find consensus among 'pro choice' and 'pro life' people, the kind of consensus that has eluded us since January 22, 1973, the day Roe v Wade was decided!

I'd also like to add the moral perspective that, even in defending the law of this country, human life can never be viewed cheaply and taken anything but seriously. The law acknowledges a range of understandings in a religiously pluralistic culture and takes into account what we might call the 'primacy of conscience'. It should not be used to celebrate abortion, an act which has SERIOUS moral implications.

Regarding Colin's call for "SAFE" and "RARE" abortions, these are unrealistic objectives. My sister had a "SAFE" abortion about 20 years ago (after Roe). While the actual physical procedure was in fact safe, she has suffered psychologically and emotionally to this day and regrets her abortion decision. Nobody told her that she would be scarred for the rest of her life. That's not "safe." Mental health is just as important as physical health. She longs for the baby she killed and often wonders what that person would be like.

Abortion has not been and never will be "rare" as long as it is legal. It is illogical and nonsensical to expect abortion to be rare when it is allowed and accepted. What would cause it to be rare? What is rare anyway; 1 out 3 women, 1 out of 4, 1 out of 20? Abortion should be 0 because life and death should be God's prerogative, not ours.

We have allowed Planned Parenthood to build a multi-million dollar profit driven business of murder. Does anyone think that Planned Parenthood wants abortion to be rare? Abortion is their lifeblood and they are doing and will do whatever they can to ensure abortion is plentiful.

Shame on us!

One of the problems in this format is that some comments really need the kind of personal attention that may not come through in the written form....

I agree with you on the mental health aspect and I think what your sister went through indicates that this is not a decision to be taken lightly and life not to be viewed cheaply.

When i say RARE, I am speaking on behalf of improved contraceptive services AND individual responsibility in terms of both sexual activity and contraceptive choice.

I hope your sister has found help and I hope you believe me when I say she will be in my prayers-
