Grateful for Notre Dame

The renowned Catholic university, The University of Notre Dame, recently invited President Obama to deliver the commencement address. This invitation triggered an onslaught of opposition from more 'traditional' Catholics, claiming that in tendering this invitation, Notre Dame was acting contrary to the 'pro life' teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. The local Bishop made known his intention to boycott the graduation because of ND's action.

As for me, I am heartened that Notre Dame has held firm in its commitment to the values of intellectual inquiry, academic freedom and engagement with those with whom one might disagree in some areas. The Catholic church has a proud collegiate intellectual tradition exemplied by such schools as Notre Dame, Georgetown and my alma mater, Holy Cross. In acting as they did, the leaders of this great university exemplified the finest in a wonderful tradition.....

I too applaud Notre Dame for standing up for abortion rights; there are too many unwanted babies in the world and who can afford them these days anyway.

Heather,

Did you ever think that it no one wanted you then you would not be existing today? God said in Dueteronomy that if a man is to hurt a pregnant woman so that she loses her unborn child then God would require life for a life. Do you know what 'fetus' means in latin? Infant.

Life begins at conception. And any church or pastor that supports abortion is not following the teachings of the bible or Jesus.

' Supporting abortion' and supporting privacy rights within the framework of US constitutional law are two different things.

I believe that the moral issue of human life found in the abortion question MUST be taken extremely seriously and that this is not a matter to deal with lightly.

However, a law which allows freedom does NOT REQUIRE abortion....
